Indoor Enclosures and Free Roaming

Keeping rabbits indoors is one of the best ways to ensure their safety, health, and social well-being. Whether you choose a dedicated enclosure or a free-roaming setup, the key is providing enough space, enrichment, and protection.

Indoor Rabbit Enclosures

Indoor enclosures should prioritize space over height. Rabbits need room to run, stretch, and hop—not climb. Exercise pens (x-pens) or modular panels are ideal, as they allow flexible layouts and far more room than traditional cages.

A proper enclosure should include:

  • A large litter box with rabbit-safe litter and hay

  • Unlimited hay access

  • Food and water bowls (heavy ceramic works best)

  • A hideout for security and rest

  • Soft flooring such as rugs, fleece, or foam mats to protect feet

The enclosure should be at least 16 sq feet. Even rabbits with enclosures still need daily time outside of it for exercise and interaction.

Free-Roaming Rabbit Setups

Free roaming allows rabbits to have access to a rabbit-proofed room or home, offering maximum enrichment and movement. This setup works best once a rabbit is litter trained and the space is properly prepared.

Key steps to successful free roaming:

  • Rabbit-proof cords using covers or by blocking access

  • Remove or block access to toxic plants

  • Protect baseboards and furniture with barriers or chew guards

  • Provide multiple litter boxes in commonly used areas

Rabbits thrive when they can choose where to rest, explore, and interact. Many owners use a “home base” enclosure that remains open, giving the rabbit a secure space while still allowing freedom.

Whether enclosed or free roaming, indoor rabbits need space, safety, and stimulation. The best setup is one that fits both your home and your rabbit’s personality while allowing natural behaviors like running, digging, chewing, and lounging comfortably.

A happy rabbit is one that feels safe, enriched, and included as part of the household.
