Choosing a Rabbit-Savvy Veterinarian
Not all vets are trained to treat rabbits, so it’s important to find one with specific experience. Look for a veterinarian who regularly treats rabbits (often called exotics vets) and is comfortable handling them. A rabbit-savvy vet should be knowledgeable about rabbit digestion, dental care, and common issues like GI stasis, and should recommend spaying/neutering at appropriate ages. They should also be confident using rabbit-safe medications and anesthesia.
A major red flag is being told to fast your rabbit before surgery. Rabbits should never be fasted as doing so can be dangerous and may lead to serious digestive complications. A knowledgeable rabbit vet will encourage your rabbit to eat right up until surgery and resume eating as soon as possible afterward.
Good signs include asking detailed questions about diet and behavior, handling your rabbit gently, and being willing to answer your questions clearly.
Tips for choosing your rabbit’s vet:
Check their knowledge of rabbit health: A rabbit-savvy vet understands rabbit digestion, dental care, and common emergencies like GI stasis.
Ask about spaying and neutering: They should confidently recommend and perform these procedures at appropriate ages using rabbit-safe anesthesia.
Never fast rabbits: If a vet tells you to fast your rabbit before surgery, this is a major red flag. Rabbits should never be fasted, as it can cause serious and dangerous digestive problems.
Rabbit-safe medications only: The vet should be familiar with medications and dosages that are safe for rabbits.
Gentle handling matters: A knowledgeable vet will handle rabbits calmly and support their body properly during exams.
Diet-focused questions are a good sign: Expect questions about hay intake, pellets, greens, and normal eating and bathroom habits.
Clear communication: A good rabbit vet is happy to explain treatments, answer questions, and discuss preventative care.
Seek trusted recommendations: Local rabbit rescues, shelters, or rabbit owners are often the best sources for finding truly rabbit-savvy vets.
